Just finished reading "Memory In the Flesh" by Ahlam Mosteghanemi. As Algeria's most important female writer, she offers an insight into this former French colony from a unique perspective as the daughter of one of the heroes of the Algerian Revolution. As well as a different take than we would be offered by combatants on either side, her writings are a milestone as she is the first successful female novelist to write in Arabic (as my mastery of the language is virtually non-existent, I have hadThe writing is very poetic and the reflections on Algeria and Constantine over a 50 year period is fascinating. His portrait of modern Algeria where daughters are given in arranged marriages to corrupt officials because there is no other choices is particularly sad. Also sad is the general disillusionment of Arabs and what has happened after their so-called freedom.Khaled is a former fighter in the Algerian war of liberation. He lives in Paris where he has become a famous painter. He loves his
mmmm - beautifully written book about hopeless love, the value of being a revolutionary and the dismay when your revolution goes sour and the revolutionaries mostly end up becoming the oppressors .... it was really poetically written, harsh at times and tragic at times. Read this novel couple of years ago and it's one of the finest books I've ever read..I remember how I marked like hundreds of pages cause of the many quotes I just loved..Ahlam Mostaghanmi has her unique writing style,in her novels it feels like it's not about the story, it's about her way of telling the story, the language she uses, the way she describes it, magical!...I remember how she described Khaled's injury, how he felt abt his lost arm, so touching, and I remembered her description
It is a so great book with a wonderful plot. I want to read angain... One of the best books I've ever read.
poetical and I got lost at the beginning. it seemed like it's a diary not a novel narrating a story. I got up to half way through the first chapter and then sadly I got bored. was also surprised by the way that the book is written from a male's perspective flattering a female while the author herself is a female.
"Thakiratu el-Djassad" is an excellent novel...It is a combination of poetry and narration in the same time...The ornements of this novel are Customs and traditions of the city of Constantine that the writer belongs to.
