In enjoyed this book. It's about a self-directed, willful woman in Spain during the Spanish civil war and WWII. She has wild love affairs and travels the world as a spy for Britain and later the US. Some of her achievements are a bit unrealistic, yet the story is so good, you don't care. The book seems to follow history well during these time periods. The book is so long (almost 1100 pages) that at times my sense of reading justice was disturbed. I felt like I should have gotten the satisfactionMy first experience with Julia Navarro's books was with "La Sangre de los Inocentes" and I was really disappointed by it. The books was nothing as I expected it to be and I kind of have ruled her out for my future readings. However, when looking for a new book to read, a friend recommended this book, and since we have shared good recommendations before I decided to follow her advice.For every detail I didn't like from the first book, this one exceed by far my expectations. This was the longest book I have slogged through in some time, and there were several times I thought it would abandon it. The way the story was actually constructed, that there was a great grandson whose family hired him to reconstruct his grandmothers life, was mostly plausible. That everyone he met spoke in exactly the same voice often meant I felt that this was not a very useful way to tell this story, and more than once I was frustrated about this. It's a great book, one of the bests that I have read. It's very well writen and it's an amazing book for people who want to know how people lived in Europe in the 20 century.
At times very fun, but not the best. The story is outrageous but I like that -- international intrigue and adventure. Communism. Romance. A lot of completely unbelievable circumstances and events that I am usually willing to forgive. What bothered me about the book was the presentation style -- that of a young man researching the life of his great-grandmother. I think ultimately the presentation distances the reader from the main characters and makes them feel less compelling/vivid. It added
