I liked the concept of a little boy discovered at a completely different time than he understood and his special gifts which was my reason for picking up the book, but some of the dialogue I just found irritating and dumb.

DNF I didn't want to dnf another book this month but I had to. This book was just boring. I liked the concept of a boy going missing then 40 sum years later he is found still thinking it's 1900 but I just don't think this book was well written. At the beginning of the book it starts with a letter from Captain Holloway and I thought that it would still be in his point of view but it changed to Jack's without saying that it would.
The simplistic nature of the storyline makes for an easy read, whilst being interesting enough to want to keep reading. There was little point having the main character as a child prodigy as it didn't feature in the story line at all - in fact the author chose to avoid it on one occasion by stating he was too tired to work out the maths behind daily events - I'm not aware a genius mind switches on and off that easily!
